I don't know of an issue between people where mediation doesn't work - as long as those involved want a solution rather than just having their day in court. Formal processes such as courts, tribunals or grievances constrain the discussion, they widen people's positions and (worst of all) somebody makes a judgement - who is right or wrong - who wins and who loses. I've never come across a scenario that's as black and white as that.
Before that judgement the people involved have invested a lot - lost sleep, stress, anxiety, time and sometimes reputation - not to mention the major financial costs with some disputes. Most mediations take one day, can be organised quickly and cost very little in comparison. A lot of people don't realise that in the unlikely event that mediation doesn't result in agreement the other processes can still be pursued and the content of the mediation remains confidential and can not be disclosed in court or a grievance.
