Don't do annual engagement surveys and think that you'll improve engagement. Talk to employees and help them to deliver improvements.

Don't identify absence patterns and jump straight to disciplinary. Talk to the employee and understand - there may be a reason and some help needed.
Don't make adjustments because an employee may be disabled.
Keep in touch with ladies on maternity leave. Think about how they integrate back into the business - don't let them lose confidence.
Other than gross misconduct don't jump straight to disciplinary investigations - have the right conversations and correct behaviour that way.
